MILWAUKEE–(January 17, 2008)–Johnson Controls has entered into a 15-year performance contract with the city of Newburgh, N.Y., to make energy-saving improvements in several public buildings.

The Newburgh Public Safety Building, which houses the city’s courthouse and police and fire departments, is being outfitted with new solar electric panels. The 10.400 kilowatt (kW) system includes 52 panels and three DC to AC (direct current to alternating current) inverters. Installed by Hudson Valley Clean Energy, the system will generate 10 kilowatts of electricity per hour and provide a projected annual savings of $2,000.

Other buildings are being retrofitted with new lighting fixtures and occupancy sensors. Air handling systems, boilers and weatherization will be upgraded, and high efficiency motors will be installed in the Sewage Treatment Plant. Upgrades to street lighting and traffic signals are also planned.

“We want to make the City of Newburgh the Green City in the Hudson Valley,” said City Manager JeanAnn McGrane. “Using solar panels on public buildings and implementing other energy-saving measures are an important part of protecting our environment and conserving our natural resources.”

Under the terms of the performance contract, Johnson Controls guarantees specified savings from the upgrades. If the level of savings does not reach a defined threshold, the company will compensate Newburgh for the difference.
